Love with Intention:

The Yoga of Conscious Partnership

I recently got engaged to the love of my life. She totally surprised me while we were in Laguna Beach with a beautiful romantic picnic by the ocean where she asked me to spend the rest of my life with her. Laughter, tears, and excitement, all at once, was a combination of emotions I had never felt before. Being seen and loved for who we truly are is the gift of a lifetime.

Since the day we met, my partner and I have been clear about the importance of our own individual growth within the container of our relationship. We have committed to supporting one another as we evolve into the fullest expressions of ourselves in this life. When I first met her, she referred to this concept using the analogy, “two canoes, one river.” We are each in our own canoe, on our own journey, flowing down the same river. And it has stuck with us ever since.

Conscious partnership refers to a relationship where both partners are fully aware and intentional about their actions, feelings, and contributions to the relationship. This type of partnership emphasizes mutual growth, open communication, and emotional support.

This week, I wanted to share some of the things that are present in our relationship that make it thrive.

Characteristics of a Conscious Partnership

1. Intentionality: Actively working towards building and maintaining a healthy relationship. Being deliberate in our actions and decisions.

2. Self-Awareness: We are aware of our own emotions, behaviors, and patterns. We understand how our past experiences shape our present interactions.

3. Open Communication: Honest and open communication is a cornerstone. We have created a container where we both feel safe to express our thoughts, feelings, and needs without fear of judgment or retribution.

4. Mutual Growth: We support each other’s personal growth and development. We see our relationship as a space for both personal and mutual evolution.

5. Emotional Support: We provide emotional support to each other, especially during challenging times. We show empathy, understanding, and compassion, no matter how big or small the scenario.

6. Conflict Resolution: When conflicts arise, they are addressed constructively. We focus on understanding each other’s perspectives and finding solutions that benefit us both.

7. Equality and Respect: There is a foundation of equality and mutual respect. We value each other’s individuality and contributions.

8. Shared Values and Goals: We have aligned values and goals. We work together towards common objectives, creating a sense of unity and purpose.

9. Mindfulness: Being present in the moment and mindful of each other’s needs and experiences helps in nurturing our deep connection.

10. Accountability: We take responsibility for our actions and their impact on the relationship. As imperfect humans, we acknowledge our mistakes and work towards making amends when needed.

Cultivating a conscious partnership requires ongoing effort, commitment, and a willingness to grow both individually and together.

This relationship did not happen by chance. It happened because when I found my yoga practice, I started learning how to love myself. And that’s the first step. Conscious partnership starts with you. Our individuality must always come first. We can support each other in partnership, but the other person cannot make you grow. You have to do the work. Healing and growing with another human can be a beautiful thing, but what makes it beautiful is the way you water your own garden every single day.

Stay true to you. Keep raising your vibration. And trust that the right people will come into your life — because they will, likely when you’re least expecting it.
